Often I’m asked – “Derek what should I do – should I go after local clients or should I do affiliate SEO?”

It’s a question that came up just a couple of days ago so I’m going to lay it all out on the line in this post and by the end my goal is that you’ve made a decision on where your approach is going to be.

For starters, it’s not one is better than the other.

Both have their strong points.

It’s a matter of knowing your personality, what your goals are, and the position that you’re currently in at the moment.

While building a business online is fun, the rewards are huge, I wouldn’t quit my day job just yet…

That’s part of the reason for the struggle during my days as a Real Estate Investor…

I’d cut off my j-o-b…

And then I started having this mindset that “I’ve got to make this deal work”.

What happens is you begin to try to force things instead of just letting them happen naturally.

You begin making bad decisions because you’re putting so much pressure on yourself to make sure it’s the right call.

And it creates an unbelievable amount of stress and tension.

You completely lose your focus.

It’s much easier, when you know you’re able to eat next week to make a decision without the emotional – “I gotta make this work or else” mentality.

Now, that I’ve got that out of the way…

The question comes should I do local vs affiliate SEO?

For me, I enjoy affiliate marketing and selling my products online.

I’ve had clients and didn’t like it at all.

However, I didn’t set the tone or the rules at the beginning.

As a result, I was annoyed with the constant questions, explaining myself, defending myself and tired of dealing with the phone calls at the least bit of any movement in the search results.

You probably would never have guessed this, but I’ll let you in on a couple of little secrets about yours truly…

First, I’m not a huge fan of the phone.

Secondly, I’m not very social.

I’m good when I’m around a handful of people, however the big crowds I get all weirded out.

So, instead of forcing it – I figured out a way to make my business work for me.

Therefore, the affiliate model has been by far my favorite model.

The cool part is I can promote something without having to really create anything.

Once I see what is selling and once I see where I can improve upon what’s in the market – guess what happens next?

I can now build something to bring to the market to sell.

This is now an asset that can pay me for months and years to come.

If you look at what I’ve done, I’ve promoted first, then I see where there’s holes in the current product and then build a better mouse trap primarily in the SEO space.

This same process works for whatever niche your in.

However, the affiliate model is…

Do work first.

That means you need to build the sites out, rank them, get traffic to them, or build a list first, then you get paid.

Local SEO is different.

Local SEO is get paid first before you start any work.

See the difference?

It’s very possible to get a client, and get paid before you do any of the work.

Lots of people believe that in order to go after a client, they need to rank the client a site first.

In my opinion, I feel this is the worst advice for anyone starting out and makes absolutely no sense.

Why would you do all that work without any hope of even getting an appointment?

The only goal if you’re going after clients is to get clients and GET PAID.

Now, if you don’t deliver and the client doesn’t see the results – you’ll not get a second or third payment.

If you’re following me and listening to me, then the results part shouldn’t be a problem.

“But Derek – I thought it was an easier sell if I rank the client first?”

It may be or they may be totally weirded out by it.

Put yourself in the business owners shoes and think about it…

The guys I know that have really succeeded in the local markets are meeting people, getting nose to nose, and always looking to make connections.

They know how to sell.

Now, you do need proof and results.

That’s why you seen so many people trying to rank for ‘Their City SEO’

It’s not there going to get a ton of leads, it has more to do with the positioning.

Being able to say hey – I rank # 1 for my city SEO.

You can also use a mass site approach to accomplish the same thing to rank for longer tail keywords.

Now, remember what I said with the affiliate model…

After I promote and see where there’s holes in the current products, I build a better mousetrap and now I have products I sell that I consider assets that I can make money from for months and years to come?

You can do the exact same process with the Local clients.

Let’s say you come up with a method for getting clients…

Or what about a software that helps you follow up, schedule, or schedule your SEO task?

How ‘bout a special closing technique?

Or even a way to rank their sites using Maps, Videos, or in the organic results?

Or a case study of how you increased a company’s lead flow by 30%?

Do you think others would pay you for that?

You betcha.

The goal of this email is to help you navigate to which is best for you…

Today, I’m going to be showing you a strategy that will help you pull in more of that almighty green while avoiding a costly mistake…

This whole Internet Marketing gig started by desperation.

In case you don’t know my story – I began by selling Real Estate properties online and once I saw I could sell houses in Florence, Alabama with a grand population just over 40,000 people to folks in Jersey and California –

I knew I was on to something.

However, my action wasn’t super focused.

I began several projects in an effort to just throw crap at the wall to see what sticks.

One of those things was writing about my Real Estate experiences and eventually I’d start conducting reviews about upcoming products that were launching.

And that’s where I saw everything start to take off.

It all boiled down to my targeting of very specific products and keywords.

Now, here’s why this still works…

People are searching because they’re needing that extra nudge.

They’re looking for more info.

Or maybe they want to see the product with a demo or they search for a bonus or the best deal they can get.

In other words, the person sending the emails hasn’t closed the deal.

If you look at most of the emails you’re getting these days, I’d bet that most are slamming you with something like this…

“Buy this now or the world will explode in … (insert countdown timer here -lol)

Which we know is total hype.

But that's mostly all that you see.

So my business really took off when I began focusing on these launches and as a result I scooped up all the traffic from the search engines of people wanting to know more about the product launching.

And it worked like gangbusters.

Using this affiliate marketing strategy, the traffic is super targeted.

Now, before I began focusing on these targeted launch keywords, it wasn't all sunshine and roses..

I'd bombed on multiple sites.

And hadn't made a dime.

Looking back I see that – my targeting was way off.

The fact is when you get your targeting right, you don't need a ton of traffic.

You're getting in front of the right people at the right time.

And as a result – it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

You don't need magic powers to get the offers to convert into sales and you don't need an enormous amount of traffic.

So, when you're targeting your SEO campaigns be sure you're going after the right keywords and not targeting to broad of a niche.

I'll give you an example…

Instead of trying to rank for the term ‘SEO'

Go after a SEO software keyword, something like ‘Senuke review' (just using this as an example)

Any who, I started showing up on countless leader boards and no one knew who I was.

And I was seeing big pops.

Numerous 5 figure promos – 10K,12K, 20K type commissions plus many even had recurring.

As a matter of fact, I still get recurring checks from these launches.

Next, I began getting traffic from more competitive niches and ranking for big money keywords.

This all dug my family out from a big hole that I'd created from the failed real estate deals.

And I’d like to tell you that we went off riding in the sunset, but that’s not what happened.

The bottom fell out from a huge mistake I made.

And I was left trying to pick up the pieces of what had just happened.

It left me in shambles, hurt and even afraid to make a move.

This mistake was devastating and it's something that I want you to avoid.

The Rich Jerk was a popular internet marketing course a few years ago that everyone loved to talk about.

And it's still a few weeks away.

What's the difference anyway?

Normally, here's how a promotion goes…

Seller will contact affiliates with something like this…

Hey Man, What's Up?  I've got a Super Hot Offer That's Converting Like Hot Cakes and Going to Make You A Gazillionaire in 24 Hours And You'll Wake Up With Not 1 Hot Blonde But 2!

Now, I'm not criticizing because I've been guilty of the same stuff in the past when I didn't know any better.

But The Rich Jerk promo is way different.

They're sending out promo packets to super affiliates and thought leaders in the internet marketing space with Rich Jerk gear.

And as you can imagine, everyone is taking photos, making social media posts and sharing the Rich Jerk gear.

It's different and extremely unique.

But most importantly – it's getting Attention in a crowded market.

Remember the old marketing formula – AIDA

Attention – Interest – Desire – Action

It's all about getting eyeballs.

And I don't care what your selling or what your service is.

Attention is the name of the game.

And you're about to see RJ take over an entire space with tons of emails and social media posts.

That's why so many are talking about your ‘personal brand' these days.

And creating more and more content.

It's all about Attention!

The Difference

The difference maker in the launches that really blow up revolves around the fact that there's really 2 launches going on.

1. There's the launch to the consumer.

   This is what many of you see where the product seller will push out teaser videos, pdf downloads, or emails to prep for the upcoming rollout.The goal here is to pre-frame the launch, and get the consumer to know, like and trust you (as the seller).

2. Now before that happens, you've got launch process to the affiliates

   No one ever talks about this.Like I said earlier, most will just hit you up on skype and ask for a promotion.If you say yes – then good, if not, then fine too.End of discussion.But the clever, well planned launches put more into the Launch process for affiliates.And this goes on weeks, months and has tons of planning.

   I've received gifts, personal videos (I hate the personal videos btw), brandable packages (like the one the Rich Jerk is putting out), but the best one I've ever received or saw was from Preston Ely when I was promoting Real Estate offers.

One afternoon, I get a note in my Post Office box stating I had a UPS package.

I was pissed because the UPS store is only open for a few hours in our neighborhood.

“DAMN! I've got to go to the stupid UPS to pick up this dumb package”  was my initial thought…

I get there, open up the package and it was a hand written note that said something like this…

“Hey Derek – I've got something cool happening soon.  I'll be sending you more details in a few weeks.”

And with the note contained $1,000.00

That not only got my attention but I also stopped dreading going to the mailbox or UPS.

Here's My thoughts…

The IM space is full of shitty products, poorly planned launches, and even worse support.

So, I'm glad to see a well thought out promotion in the works, in real time.

And happy to see cool launches like the Rich Jerk or what Preston pulled off with Freedomsoft years ago.

I'd recommend watching what's going on with this promotion if you're into launches or into selling your own stuff.

You'll learn a thing or two.

And here's to better launches in the future…

A few weeks ago, I had a very long chat with a potential client and he admitted he'd been in Exploratory, Research mode for the last 18 months attending masterminds, conferences, and buying numerous software.

And while I appreciate his honesty, certainly he's not the first that's fallen into this trap.

My goal in this blog post is only to inspire you to get focused on what's important and that is…

Generating MONEY!

If you're not focused on generating revenue, then you have a glorified hobby.

And not a real business.

But back to the story…

18 months and still not in money getting mode?

Put this in perspective.

Facebook is only 11 years old at the time of this post.

Teespring was formed in 2011 – just 4 years ago.

WordPress is only 10 years old.

Youtube is only 10 years old.

The Kickstarter platform was created in 2009.

Now granted these are big companies and websites – I listed them to illustrate just how relatively young these big businesses are.

There's so many that took action and generating 6, even 7 figures online without being one of the big brands I mentioned above – just working quietly from home.

18 Months in pure research and analyzing a market isn't going to cut it.

If you look at Napolean Hill's research of over 500 millionaires they all shared the fact they were decisive.

It's paralysis analysis and so many starting out – fall into this very trap.

And here's the deal, I know what it's like.

I remember a point in time, when I was going under.

Over $100,000 in credit cards from the Real Estate bubble.

Luckily for me, I stumbled upon something.

But luck had little to do with it.

See, I wasn't researching.

I wasn't analyzing.

I wasn't pondering on what to do next.

My wife and I had stared down the number and come up with a plan to take it on.

To make matters worse though, we were being audited by the good ole' Internal Revenue for over 3 years of tax returns!

Here's the good news!

You don't have to wait around for 18 months to start making money online.

You've got to decide right now that you're going to put yourself in money getting mode.

And there's no better way than using Affiliate Marketing.

You can start making money immediately without worrying about creating products or anything like that.

One way is to use Youtube for your traffic and marketing.

That article is a great place to start.

For those that may be new here – Affiliate Marketing is performance based.

Which means – you get paid a commission for referring sales.

Now, I mentioned earlier that I was in a massive amount of debt and I was just getting started online.

Affiliate marketing is the tool I used that helped dig my way out that started this entire business.

I focused on information products that were high ticket and that had recurring revenue.

These products ranged from $100 – $3,000 a pop which means I'd make as much as $1500 in commissions on some of the products I promoted.

It doesn't take many of these sales to get a nice pop.

Now, the cool thing – it all started on a shoestring budget.

And I didn't have a following.

No one knew who I was in the space.

And I didn't have a huge email list either.

Yet, I found a way to use my strengths to my advantage.

And started showing up on one leaderboard after another.

I like it because it allows me to see some of the cool stuff people are doing.

However, there's one thing that really bothers me that I've seen people doing over the last year or so that's a HUGE mistake.

It's sending your traffic to a Youtube video when you're trying to sell something.

I've seen it when people are selling their own product, or affiliate products.

So, what's the problem?

First of all, it's a huge distraction.

I talked about it in this post briefly…

You start looking for a Tutorial video on list building and the next thing you know – you're watching cats run on a treadmill or Kate Upton bounce in a spaceship.

Take a look at all of the places the visitor has to click away from your video

And you're relying on your visitor to find your link in the description to click to buy something.

It just doesn't happen that way…

Secondly, by redirecting your visitor to your offer page instead of a Youtube video, you can setup a retargeting campaign.

Retargeting is when the user visits your page, they're cookied and now you can use ads to follow them around the internet…

If you've never done one, they're super simple to do – I may include a tutorial on how to set one up in one of my next blog posts.

If you change this up, take an extra 5 minutes and add some scarcity to your offers, you'll multiply your income by 10.

No joke.

Here's the tools I use…

First, Timerlay is one of the best tools I've used in my internet marketing career that I can say hands down – this tool is responsible for a massive increase in income.

Many don't know this but I had a similar tool that was a WordPress plugin – actually this was the first of the scarcity plugins.

But Timerlay blows it out of the water along with everything else I've tested.

The next tool that I used in this video and recommend that you pick up is Optimizepress 2.

Initially, I hated this version because I was accustomed to the first version – but now I use it almost daily and love it.
