Just got back from Dawson’s cross country race…

And I got a little choked up.

Here’s why…

Last week he had a terrible run – it was probably his worst run since he started running cross country.

We had a long discussion about conducting yourself and always pushing yourself.

And shooting for your personal best.

Today was different.

I wrote on a notepad before I dropped him off a number with the word TIME above it.

He come down stairs and ask – “what’s this?”

I said – “this is the time you’re going to get today”

And I wrote the words on the back of the paper – “I believe in you”.

He looked a little shocked and puzzled because he’d never run a time that fast.

On the way to drop him off, I asked him to visualize what it would feel like if he finished the race in the time I wrote on the piece of paper.

I told him to visualize what it would be like crossing the finish line and seeing the time on the clock.

And to think about –

What would his friends say?

What would the coach say?

And what would we say?

I wanted him to think about reaching the goal.

He loaded the bus and I wondered if he thought I was going off the deep end or if it would sink in what I was trying to do.

I get to the race and we have a quick chat before the race begins.

I watched and could tell something was different today.

He was running.

He was running with purpose.

And guess what time he finished with?

He was about 12 seconds off from the time I wrote on the sheet of paper.

And he’d probably reached that time if he hadn’t puked right before the finish line.

I gotta tell you when I saw him coming across the finish line and puking at the same time – it gave me chills.

I went up to him and gave him a sweaty hug because I was so proud of him.

And he told me – “I believe I visualized seeing that number while I was running a way back – so the time was probably what I had realistically envisioned..”

Pretty cool – huh?

Often we think of all the things we’ve done wrong or failed with instead of thinking about our goals…

We re-live these instances and that’s what I wanted to change with him.

I didn’t want him to think about last week – just imagine what he could do.

Now, let me ask you a question…

What do you think of when you think of Matthew McConaughey?

What comes to mind?

Successful movie star?

Great actor?

Academy Award Winner?

Oscar Winner?

The Lincoln spokesman?

Or do you think of his latest movie – “The Sea of Trees?”

This movie starred Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts, and has made a whopping $2,730 in 5 days

$2,730 in 5 days…

So how does a flick that starts two of the biggest draws in Hollywood completely bomb at the box office?

I’ll let you in on a little secret…

Everyone.

And I mean everyone has a dud every now and then.

Everyone has something that didn’t go as planned.

I’ve seen some of the most brilliant marketers have launches that bomb.

I’ve seen on the day when the cart opens and affiliates are mailing like crazy – the servers go down for over 48 hours.

Bottom line is you can’t stop going to the plate and taking a swing.

Do you think this is going to hurt McConaughey?

I’d say there’s not a chance he lets this get to him.

Chances are that he’s already on the next shoot and planning for the next promotion.

So, no matter where you are in your business.

Realize that there’s a reason your rear view mirror is much smaller than the windshield.

What you’re doing today is far more important than what happened yesterday.

I see a lot of people operating their SEO and their online business from a place of fear.

Fear of what could happen.

Afraid of what’s happened in the past.

And listening to the wrong people tell them bad advice.

That’s why I’m doing something to help make your SEO great again.

It's gonna be YUUUGEEE.

And you're going to love it.

I’ll be sending you an email tomorrow with all the details.

“Question: Are you trying to be something you’re not?”

I see it in the marketing space all the time, fitness gurus too.

The internet guy trying to make a name for himself by trying to compare his accomplishments with that of someone that’s been in the space for years with tons of connections and street cred.

The guy on the magazine ripped to shreds that’s commended on his diet and exercise that you know is ‘Juicing’.

There comes a point where you've got to stop comparing yourself.

Be happy where you , however have a healthy thirst for more.

In the sports world, I love college football and the 49’ers. I’ve been a Kaepernick fan from the day he took over the starting role from Alex Smith.

And if you’ve watched him for any amount of time, you’ll see he’s now playing timid, playing not to lose and ‘the noise’ has gotten in his head.

And he just trying not to make a mistake.

It's as if he's focused on that instead of the positive which is being fluid, lighting up a defense like he's done multiple times in his career.

Bottom line, he’s trying to be something he’s not.

For one, his biggest asset is his ability to run – always has been.

What’s interesting is after they had success with his legs and was so close to Super Bowl win and a foot away from returning to the Super Bowl the following year, they’ve tried to turn him into a pocket passer.

So, instead of emphasizing his greatest strengths, the 49ers have done nothing but try to make him change with the offense play calling, and most importantly lack of support with the offensive line.

I hate to see it and it's very mind boggling especially for a fan.

And now, everyone is jumping on the band wagon about how inefficient he is and making comparisons.

The reason is because he’s trying to be something he’s not.

And comparisons can “f” with your true ability

How does this relate to your business?

Stop trying to be a guru.

Instead be real.

Show your true self. Show your faults.

The most activity I’ve ever had on any email or blog post was the one where I admitted I’d been in 100K in debt and how I overcame it.

Are you aware that people would love to know about your small successes?

Do you realize how many people would love to know how you got 1 video at the top?

Or 1 client?

Or made $500 from affiliate marketing?

I’m working with someone privately and they’ve went from not knowing what a PBN was and knowing very little about SEO to making $500 their first month as an affiliate marketer.

While $500 is not a lot of money, it’s a start.

If I’d done $500 my first month, I’d been on cloud 9.

It took years before I ever made a dime.

Moral of the story is – just be you.

Be real.

Stop comparing.

Celebrate the victories no matter how large or small they may be.

Stop playing to not lose.

And start playing to win.

Set a goal and go all out regardless.

I’m a fan and I’m pulling for each and everyone of you that maybe reading this.

And Kaepernick – I'm a fan and I'm pulling for you

Keep your head up. Realize your comeback is going to make a helluva story.

What does this guy in the picture below have to do with Goal Setting?

And how can a cute puppy help you achieve more?

Read on to find out how you can achieve more, reach your goals, and be a happy in the process.

Let me begin by saying – I'm not your rah-rah, motivational speaker or anything like that.

This is just a sneak peek into what works for me and I hope you can pull a tip or two to help you accomplish your goals..

I realized a couple of years ago strategies that work for me to gain momentum and I've used it to my benefit over and over again.

For some, we need a little motivation to push us.

I'm one of those people.

I get comfortable.

And as a result – sometimes I find myself willing to settle.

There's times I find that I feel invincible – like everything I touch turns to gold, and feeling strong and healthy.

And then…

There's those times, when I lose the momentum.

And in those cases, I want to bury my head under my pillow and not get out of bed for a week.

I lose the drive to conquer.

The drive to achieve.

I'm sure you've felt the same way at some point in your life.

This technique will help you break the negative pattern, get clear on a goal, and create momentum which is what you need.

Let me backtrack to a few years ago sitting in a Real Estate seminar in Phoenix, Arizona.

One of the guys speaking loved racing as a hobby.

And the one thing that stuck was what he'd said.

“When racing, they teach you to look ahead at where you're going. If you look to the wall – that's where you'll end up.”

Walls are bad.

Transitioning this to the world of business – you need a target.

A goal.

If you focus on the debt, the credit cards – it's going to rob you of any creative juice you may have and your frustration will only grow.

So, here's what I do to get more done and get my ass moving.

Pick out something you really, really want. It's got to be something tangible.

Set the goal or your target.

Set the deadline

Create a plan for how you're going to get there.

Decide on something you hate doing that you'll do in the event you don't reach your goals.

Make the commitment to someone that will hold you accountable (even consider going public with it and writing a blog about your daily experience.)

So, let's break down these 6 steps.

Step 1. Pick out something you really want.

This is something that you've wanted for a while. A tangible item or it could be an experience.

But it's something that's not a necessity.

So, for example, it could be a car, a new watch, a trip to Disney.

Whatever. Just something you've wanted for some time.

Step 2. Select Your Goal Or Target

What's your goal? Are you wanting to reach a certain dollar figure in sales?

Get more leads? What is it exactly that you want?

For most of you this will be a financial or sales goal but really applies to anything you're doing from health and fitness to entrepreneurs.

Step 3. Set the Deadline

There's more than one way to skin a cat but I work better with shorter term goals.

Goals that are 90 days or less.

Now, I've got a much larger goal and idea of where I wanna be in 3-5 years, but it seems so far out of reach that if I focus on that – I feel overwhelm and never move.

With a 90 day window, I can reverse what I need to accomplish in daily task to meet my goals without feeling overwhelmed or that I'm trying to tackle this huge mountain that seems unattainable.

Step 4. What's your Plan of Attack?

How exactly do you plan to get there?

This will all depend on where you're currently at with your existing business and your previous experience.

Do you have a list?

Do you have a product near completion?

Or are you starting from scratch?

In other words, most of you probably know me for being an SEO guy, however I'm also a product creator, affiliate marketer, consultant, and I drive a lot of traffic with Email Marketing.

So, if I'm looking at my deadline window – where am I at to get me there the quickest?

SEO may not be the best avenue to reach my particular goal.

Essentially, know how you plan to kick the goals ass.

And work your way backwards.

What do you need to accomplish monthly, weekly, and daily to reach your target?

And work like hell to reach it up until the final days of your deadline.

Step 5. What is it that you hate?

For me, it's landscaping. I hate it.

Anytime I work in the yard, I get all stuffy with allergies.

And I'll avoid it at all cost. Just ask my wife.

Now, here's what you do.

You commit to doing the one thing you hate if you fail to reach your goal.

Say it's landscaping, it could be that you'll shave your head (hey there's an idea).

It has to be something drastic to get you moving.

For many, we will push harder to avoid the things we don't want.

Others will push for the goal.

This way you're getting the best of both worlds.

And Step 6. Commit to the plan with someone you trust.

And even better is making it public.

I'll give you an example.

The puppy you seen at the beginning of this post is Vedder.

My 1 year old Golden Doodle.

About 6 months before we got him, I made a deal with my wife.

If I reached a certain dollar figure in revenue within 90 days – we'd get the dog.

If not, I'd do the landscaping.

And as you can see, he's here with us in a big way.

Within 60 days, I'd already reached 90% of my goal…

That's what happens when you light a fire under your ass while you have some motivation to getting more done…

This is not a ‘think it' and it will come or a rah-rah session.

You've got to put in the work.

And I'm thinking down to the last hour of the 90 day window of what I'm going to do to reach it.

To put this in perspective – I bought a Hummer (this has been my favorite vehicle and something I'd dreamed about for a long time) and got Vedder all within a few months of each other just from using this strategy.

What Happens When You Come Up Short?

It happens to all of us.

We set a goal and something happens to prevent from reaching our target.

Well for starters, if you made the landscaping bet – get your landscaping tools out.

Because, you've got to follow through.

However, if you didn't reach your goal, take a look at the progress you made.

How close did you get?

My guess is that if you followed the formula above – if you didn't reach it, then you got extremely close.

Closer than if you'd not pushed yourself.

So, re-evaluate your goals and set the next 90 day target.

And 90 days isn't set in stone either.

You may find your ideal time line to be 30 or 60 days.

And I know some that do better with bigger goals.

This is just what works for me.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did writing it

UPDATE…

Just to give you an update from the initial writing of this post.

Vedder turns 2 today and here's an updated picture from a few weeks ago for a quick shot for an ad I'm running.

My start online wasn’t all sunshine and roses.

You’ve heard about the wiz kid that rolled out a product and banked 100K in days or the video game player that banked $7.4 million in 2014 from yes – playing video games.

Mine was completely contrary to those…

It was dirty.

It was grimy.

There was mistakes.

There was a lot of sweat and tears that went into building my online business.

No blood though.

And that’s a huge positive.

Which is why I love this business so much.

There’s no blood.

Seriously, the upside is huge.

Nothing compares to the profit margins you can see from online marketing no matter if your selling your own information products or selling them as an affiliate.

And it’s not hard work.

I’ll get back to that in a moment, but for now it’s story time!

Actually – a true story…

When I was 17 years old, I picked up a hot, summer job at a furniture plant here in Alabama.

In the dog days of summer, you’d see heat 90-100+.

My job was simply to clean up.

Sweep up sawdust, take out the trash, and stack the furniture parts on pallets to get ready for shipping.

Nothing to hard – just work.

The plant had this machine that would duplicate chair legs.

You could put a chair leg in and it would replicate 8 -10 legs just like it.

Underneath this massive machine, there was another machine with vents that sucked out the sawdust from the plant and into a big bin.

Every few weeks, a dumpster would arrive underneath the big bin and my job was to climb in the back of the truck, grab a big stick and jam the packed sawdust to loosen it so that it would fall into the truck.

Sawdust would fly everywhere.

It was in my nose.

In my hair.

And even in my socks and shoes.

The dust seemed like a big swarm of bees being dumped on you.

And you were already drenched so it stuck all over you.

Going home after that I’d blow these black chunks out of my nose.

But hey – I was making $2 more than minimum wage.

I’ll never forget one day in particular.

It was mid morning, just after a break and I was doing my normal cleanup routine.

I was talking to the bossman, Larry at the time.

He reeked of halitosis from all the cigarettes – and he always talked to you with one partially hanging from his lips while he looked over his coke bottle glasses over his nose.

Alvin (one of the older co-workers) was taking chair legs out of the duplicator machine.

All of a sudden, Alvin takes off running through the plant screaming in pain.

“What the hell just happened?”

I had no clue what was going on.

As I looked up, I saw Alvin holding his own hand with a bloody end.

“God Dammit – Alvin got caught in the saw. Call 911”, I heard my other boss yell.

Everyone started running to tend to him in panic mode and I shut off the sawdust sucking machine.

And then I was given strict instructions.

Larry, as he looked over his coke bottled glasses, still with the cigarette hanging on the tips of his lips –

“Derek, get under the machine and find Alvin’s finger!”

Uhhhh, Do what now?

“Oh and while your at it – clean up the trail of blood too!”

So, there I was.

Seventeen years old.

A virgin, bit of a dork who felt he’d been dropped in the middle of the lion’s den anyway.

It was my first real experience with the world away from loving, but overprotective parents and church every time the doors were opened.

And now, I was in charge of locating a man’s fingers that had just been hacked off by a saw.

I crawl under the machine and find the fingers to get them on ice.

While I was holding them in the palm of my hand I took a quick looksie at the man's severed fingers.

Even though, I was totally grossed out – that day left a big imprint on my life.

I made a commitment right then –

“I’ll never be in this position when I get older. “

I didn’t have a clue what I’d be doing – but I knew there had to be a better way.

So, when I say that no blood is a positive thing-

I really mean it.

Hold another man’s finger in the palm of your hand and then clean up the trail of blood.

Now, sitting at a computer – that ain’t so bad – eh?

But getting back to my start.

I really struggled.

My first money making venture was selling houses on ebay but that was only used to get out of properties I couldn’t give away here locally.

I’ll save that story for another time.

But that opened a door and created a burning desire to start making money online.

Only thing was – I had no experience with computers outside of gaming, and using Microsoft Excel.

I started by selling my ebooks that I had written, building a list, blogging, article submission, PPC, and even SEO.

The fact is I made some HUGE mistakes…

And it wasn’t until I made a huge shift that everything started to really click.

That’s what you’re going to hear me talk about over the next couple of weeks.

So, be sure you’re on the email list and look for the email I’ll be dropping tomorrow.

And be sure to watch your fingers – it helps when it comes to typing.

Now – type me some comments below…

Derek
