Glad to be back writing this email from a bit of a hiatus.

Last week was one of ‘those’ weeks if you know what I mean.

The week started with the car in the shop and ended with me in the shop…

With a fractured tooth!

I got the teeth all fixed up yesterday and tried pitching the dentist on why his website sucked and why he needed me to step in and help him.

Probably not the best pitch in the world since I was slurring my speech from the meds they hooked me up with.

He’ll come around though.

Partially because I don’t need him.

He needs me waaayyyy more.

I’ll still be rocking and ranking my affiliate campaigns.

While his site will still be there sucking and costing him biznass.

(He’s got a picture of him with an Auburn cheerleader on the home page for crying out loud.)

Luckily for him, I never saw his site until this week.

Anywho…

Let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this email.

I’ve got a friend that’s done all kinds of black hat SEO.

Done some very aggressive linking, mass pages, cloaking –  you name it.

Even put out a couple of programs.

Few months ago, she dropped off the grid and even stopped mailing her list.

She’ll pop in on social media once in a while to rub it in everyone’s face at how quick she’s gotten something on the first page…

But for the most part, it’s like she’s been in a cave doing her thing…

Lately she's been testing some interesting techniques as it relates to Youtube.

The results have been crazy.

It’s the 2nd most visited site on the planet and she’s ranking for some pretty insane keywords like I said…

1. Become a Youtube partner and display Ads from Adwords. 

   It’s pretty simple to be approved as a Youtube partner and this will allow you to display ads on your channel, video ads before your video as well as banner ads that are displayed on your video.

2. Use Youtube To Rank in Google and Youtube for Affiliate Marketing terms. 

   I've made a lot of money from this strategy alone.Now, many will strictly focus on ranking in Google – however there’s an entire audience in Youtube that shouldn’t be overlooked.

   So not only can you rank your videos as I’ve done, but you can simultaneously build a following from Youtube where you’re reviewing different products.

3. Rank For local keywords and sell leads or rent the space.

1. Making the most of your Channel Home Page

For starters, your home page of your channel should be your most important content as well as contain links to all your other properties.

You’ll find that you can include links to your other channels as well as a landing page to capture their email or contact you for more information.

Take a look at the screenshot below to see the links you can include on your channel home page.

This example is of the Six Pack Shortcuts Youtube channel and I recommend you mimic what he's doing here in your own niche.

Take note of how his header is moving you to the suggested links moving you toward the email optin and connecting across various channels.

2. External Link Annotations

These are links that will allow you to link to your associated website.  For each channel, you can have an associated website that you can links to.

Let’s take a look at my Magic Submitter Training videos, you’ll see an external link annotation, that links to a landing page outlining a bonus for anyone that invest in Magic Submitter.

Most people only rely on the small link in the description of a Youtube video -which is a big no- no…

If you’re only relying on that one aspect you’re missing out because you can’t assume the average user will look at your description, find the tiny link in the description and click on it.

So take the extra step and connect your website to start taking advantage of the external link annotations.

As you know, I’ve used Youtube to rank videos and drive traffic the last several years.

However, right now there is a boom for buying traffic and retargeting with Youtube and it’s currently wide open. 

And it's incredibly cheap.

However, one thing I notice is people failing to look at the current landscape in Google for their particular keyword – seeing what’s in the top 10 not only helps you sharpen your SEO chops, but also reveals what Google is really looking for…

Here’s what I mean…

Did you ever wonder why sometimes Google shows videos at the top, but on some searches they’re nowhere to be found?

They do so when they believe it will help the user experience…

In short – They display the videos when they believe that’s what the user is looking for…

Let’s look at a few examples…

First let’s look at a local example Garage Door Repair Dallas

It gets 480 searches per month at $50 per click with Adwords.   This is a big money keyword for local – look at all the ads and what people are spending per click.

Notice, there’s no videos on the first page but yet there’s thousands of videos when you click on the video tab.

Next let’s look at another example…

Bail Bonds Orange County gets 880 searches per month and the suggested bid is $62 in Adwords, yet no videos are being displayed on the first page despite having thousands of videos submitted in Youtube.

Now, let’s look at something completely different and a bit off the wall –

Miley Cyrus Twerking  Gets lots of search volume

Notice the top of the search results are 3 things – Images, Videos, and News Releases.

Now – don't search for Miley and waste hours on Youtube, but I brought it up to to answer this–

Why is that some searches have videos while others have none at all?

It's all about intent of the user…

Google is letting you know by what's in the top of the search results what they feel the user wants to see.

Now, before you start in saying – “Derek said you can’t rank videos if there are no videos on the first page.”

That’s not what I’m implying, however if you do spot videos on the first page – then you know Google is displaying videos on that keyword for a reason which in my experience makes it easier to rank…

Google believes the user is looking for a video and that’s why it’s being displayed.

So – why go against the grain?

Google is giving you what they’re looking for, next you'll need to do your due diligence to find out why they’re ranking and how you can outdo that video.

Is it backlinks, likes, comments, or views?

If you're doing any kind of screen capture recording for video marketing, creating tutorials, then Camtasia is the best software on the market.  It's $299 to buy and right now it's $99 to upgrade from previous versions.  Also you can test it out with their 30 day fully functional trial.  In all reality, this is one of the best investments I've ever made.

Anyway, I've yet to test it but excited to do so because of the faster rendering and smoother videos, plus I can't wait to test out the new editor with the multiple tracks feature.

I'll do my best to crank out a few videos and report back .  Also picked up another toy today but I'll save that one for another post.
